Transportation in Piran

Getting to Piran


By Bus


Buses from the capital city of Ljubljana depart from the bus station close to the train station every day. Travel time is about 2 hours and the journey is comfortable and everything else but boring. The beautiful landscape will occupy your mind and you will come to Piran without knowing that you've just spend 2 hours on a bus. The Piran bus station is situated at the gateway to the old town centre of Piran, right by the sea.

By Plane


Adria Airways - Slovenia's national airline, has a regular flights connecting almost all of Europe's big cities. The capital city, Ljubljana has connections to Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris, Brussels, London, Manchester, Dublin, Barcelona, Podgorica, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Moscow, Pristina, Skopje, Copenhagen, Ohrid, Tel Aviv, Split, Sarajevo, Istanbul, Prague and many more. Easy Jet has flights to Stansted London.

The closest airport to Piran in Slovenia is Joze Pucnik Airport (154km), but Trieste airport just across the border is much closer (80km).

By Train


Trains connect most parts of Slovenia and are one of the best ways to travel. The trains are mostly modern, though you can find some old coaches and the routes are extensive and serve most major towns and cities. There are also excellent connections to cities outside Slovenia and travellers can choose to arrive in the country from Austria, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Croatia, Czech Republic, Serbia and Switzerland by train. This is a comfortable and inexpensive means of getting around the country as well.

The international train station is located in Koper, about 16km away from Piran. Here you can pick up international tickets.

By Car


Because it's so close to Italy and Croatia, Piran is easily accessible by car. It lies only 34km from Italian and 30km from Slovenian motorway. Piran can accessed from the direction Ljubljana-Trieste-Koper-Izola-Portoroz-Piran.

By Ship


Boat service is running between Portoroz, Piran, Strunjan, Izola, Koper and Ankaran. There are also many boat trips available. You can go by boat to Venice, Brioni and Croatia or you can choose among numerous panoramic trips. The Portoroz marine is situated 4km from the town center, the Izola marine 8km and the big Koper marine and port 17km. By sea, Portoroz and Venice are only 55km apart.

Getting Around Piran


Piran is very small. The only way to get around is to walk, but is probably only 30 minutees from one end to the other. Cars are mostly not allowed in the old town and even when they are it's quite hard to find a parking space which is also very expensive. There is a parking available outside the town center.
